Algeria contributes 5 million euros to UNESCO’s Emergency Fund
From 8 to 11 April 2012, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova is on an official visit to Algeria at the invitation of the Government.
On 9 April, the Director-General met with the President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The President expressed his country’s full support to UNESCO and to the reform process undertaken by Irina Bokova. The Director-General thanked the President and welcomed the proposal submitted by the Algerian authorities to host the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee in 2013. She also supported the President’s request to create a Category 2 Regional Centre for the protection of Intangible Heritage in Africa. The President requested UNESCO’s support through its expertise in training journalists and in vocational training.
To mark Algeria’s support to UNESCO’s action, the President presented a contribution to UNESCO’s Emergency Fund of 5 million euro. “UNESCO is pleased and proud to be able to count on Algeria’s support,” declared the Director-General.
Irina Bokova held also bilateral meetings with the Minister of Education Boubekeur Benbouzid, the Minister of Culture Khalida Toumi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci, the Minister of Youth and Sports El Hachemi Djiar and the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. During these meetings, the Director-General reviewed various aspects of the cooperation between UNESCO and Algeria.
