Seminar in Rio discusses life and legacy of Sergio Vieira de Mello
"10 Years without Sergio Vieira de Mello" is the title of the seminar that will take place on August 19, 2013, at 8:30 am at Espaço Tom Jobim, in Rio de Janeiro’s Botanical Garden. The event has been organized in partnership by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and the United Nations, with the support of Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation.
The opening of the seminar will be attended by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, and the UN resident coordinator, Jorge Chediek.
The panel which will discuss the life and legacy of Sergio Vieira de Mello will include the former President of Timor-Leste and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau, José Ramos-Horta, the UN resident coordinator in Colombia and coordinator in Panama, Fabrizio Hochschild and Kim Bolduc, among others.
The occasion will also see the launching of this year's campaign for World Humanitarian Day, an initiative of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In 2012 the campaign mobilized a billion people worldwide who united their voices in favour of the humanitarian cause. The online platform for the official campaign, www.worldhumanitarianday.org, will be launched on the day.
About World Humanitarian Day
The UN General Assembly proclaimed 19 August as World Humanitarian Day in 2008 to remember the 2003 bombing of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, which claimed the lives of 22 UN staff, including the principal envoy of the Organization to the Middle Eastern country, the Brazilian, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
How will the campaign work
The concept of this year's campaign is "let’s turn words into action". The initiative is a call to choose the best word to complete the sentence "The world needs more ...” In an online platform that acts as a "market of words" participants will have a number of options.
Companies around the world are being invited to sponsor a word of their choice, for an amount of their choice as well. Once the partner has committed to transform the chosen word into reality, through their sponsorship, we will insert the word in our "market of words." Each word will have only one global sponsor.
The money raised through this campaign will go to a global humanitarian fund attending to the major humanitarian crises of our time: Somalia, Haiti, Syria, Yemen and Myanmar.
