Working with and for marginalized adolescent girls

In many regions of the world, adolescent girls are among the most vulnerable and marginalized groups of the population and face a range of complex disadvantages and rights violations.

Education has a profound effect on girls’ and women’s ability to assert other rights and achieve status in society, such as economic independence and political representation. Progress has been made in promoting female education and training over recent years, largely as a result of intensive advocacy from a multitude of actors. However, there is also a strong conviction that a great deal still needs to be done. Obstacles to female education remain a reality in many countries, and impair women and girls from fully enjoying the right to education and the benefits associated to all other rights.

  • Advocating, through partnership and networking, girls’ education and gender parity;
  • Ensuring that gender perspectives, based on research and analysis, inform education policy and practice;
  • Supporting the provision of gender-responsive educational services, including guidance and counseling for school-age girls, teacher training and the production of learning materials.
  • UN Interagency framework/guidance for reaching the most marginalized and disadvantaged adolescent girls.
    With the aim of sharing experience and good practice and of developing interagency guidelines for working with the most marginalized adolescent girls, several partners of the UN systems are currently engaged in a consultative process, led by UNICEF.
