UNESCO participates in the Peace and Sport International Forum 2010 in Monaco
UNESCO participated in the Peace and Sport International Forum 2010 held in Monaco from 1 to 3 December 2010. UNESCO has been a strong supporter of the Peace and Sport Organization, under the patronage of S.A.S Prince Albert of Monaco, and has participated in each of its International Forums since its creation.
Representing UNESCO Director-General, Pilar Alvarez-Laso, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, addressed participants during the opening ceremony, emphasizing the great potential of sport in mobilizing youth, particularly in terms of volunteerism and social entrepreneurship.
Golda El-Khoury, Chief of the UNESCO Section for Youth, Sport and Physical Education, participated in a plenary session on the role of governments for peace education through sport and was also a member of the jury of the Peace and Sport Awards 2010. Launched in 2008, the Awards recognize sport initiatives and individuals contributing to peace and social stability, particularly in contexts of poverty and post-conflict.
UNESCO will further strengthen cooperation with the Peace and Sport Organization, focusing on sport for reconciliation, development and youth engagement in post-conflict situations.
A recent publication by Joël Bouzou, the President and Founder of Peace and Sport, La paix par le sport : quand le mythe devient réalités (Peace through sport: from myth to realities, ed. Armand Colin), emphasizes the role of sport in addressing these challenges.
