UNESCO signs a memorandum of understanding with El Colegio de México (COLMEX)
At the occasion of the signature of the Memorandum of Understanding between UNESCO and El Colegio de Mexico A.C, the President of COLMEX, Dr Javier Garciadiego, received the Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, Pilar Álvarez Laso, on 4 September 2012 at the El Colegio de Mexico premises in Mexico City.
Through this agreement, COLMEX, a prestigious higher education institution which aims to train researchers of the highest level in the social sciences and humanities, will offer selected students the opportunity to enhance their academic knowledge by undertaking research projects in fields related to UNESCO’s mandate and work, with a particular emphasis on social inclusion, the social dimensions of global environmental change and migration.
In his remarks, Dr Javier Garciadiego highlighted the importance of strengthening the capacities of researchers and scientists of the highest level in social sciences and humanities. “I am convinced that this collaboration will bring benefits to both institutions and I am certain that we are creating a magnificent learning opportunity for our students”.
UNESCO will offer highly qualified students the opportunity to carry out their research projects by spending from 6 to 18 months at either its Headquarters in Paris or in a field office, and learning about its functioning, activities and specialists. Ms Álvarez Laso recalled that within the United Nations, UNESCO is gaining responsibility on youth related issues, understood not only as an audience or target group, but as agents of social transformation. “With this agreement we want to promote an enhanced contribution of young researchers in UNESCO’s substantive work,” she voiced.
Dr Garciadiego expressed the hope that “this collaboration will only be the beginning of a larger collaboration with UNESCO”.
