Promoting sustainable development and effective use of natural resources in Karakalpakstan
From 1 to 3 April 2014, the Khorezm Rural Advisory Support Service (KRASS) with support of the UNESCO Tashkent Office conducted the training in order to promote sustainable development in agriculture and effective use of natural resources in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan. This training was carried out in the framework of the UN Joint Programme “Sustaining Livelihoods Affected by the Aral Sea Disaster”.
Some 100 participants from three regions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan - Beruniy, Ellikkala and Turtkul –participated in the training, which focused on salt-resistant cash crops, innovations and modern technologies for growing crops on degraded and marginal lands, and the efficient water management.
The capacity-building was based on the findings of a research project undertaken by the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, in collaboration with UNESCO and the State University of Urgench, between 2002 and 2010. Information and techniques for growing cash crops in the specific conditions of the Aral Sea Basin was disseminated and good agricultural practices shared among farmers and specialists.
Moreover, the farmers gained the overview of the various crops and seeds that are available to them, and how to use them in the most efficient way.
