Promoting sustainable development and effective use of natural resources in Karakalpakstan
From 1 to 3 April 2014, the Khorezm Rural Advisory Support Service (KRASS) with support of the UNESCO Tashkent Office in the framework of the UN Joint Programme “Sustaining Livelihoods Affected by the Aral Sea Disaster”, will conduct a training to promote sustainable development in agriculture and effective use of natural resources in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan.
Some 100 participants from three regions of the Republic of Karakalpakstan - Beruniy, Ellikkala and Turtkul - will participate in the training, which will focus on salt-resistant cash crops, innovations and modern technologies for growing crops on degraded and marginal lands, and the efficient water management.
The capacity-building is based on the findings of a research project undertaken by the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, in collaboration with UNESCO and the State University of Urgench, between 2002 and 2010. Information and techniques for growing cash crops in the specific conditions of the Aral Sea Basin will be disseminated and good agricultural practices will be shared.
Moreover, the farmers will be expected to gain an overview of the various crops and seeds that are available to them, and how to use them in the most efficient way.
