The manual for teachers «Education for a sustainable development»


The campaign on uniting idea of a sustainable development with an education system and professional trainings, has been initiated UNESCO in the early nineties the last century when teachers around the world have started to think about ways of reflexion of “Millenium goals” in educational process, how to draw attention of people to environment and development problems, to make them capable to see interrelation between these questions and to allocate with their necessary knowledge and skills, to solve problems in face of which one there was a mankind.

It is obvious to train effectively and bring up for a sustainable development, education should cover a physicalbiological and social-economic component of the Life, to reveal and study their continuous linkages and interdependency. It is important to integrate ideas of sustainability into all studied disciplines, to develop views of pupils about economic, ecological and the social factors conducting to stable harmonious development or, on the contrary, to crisis. The aim of education for a sustainable development – education of the competent person with the active civic liability, capable critically to think, estimate a present situation and to predict consequences of the human activity from the point of view of negative affecting on social development and environment.

The manual «Education for a sustainable development» is developed by Dr. Azamat Azizov and Dr. Natalya Akinshina from the National University of Uzbekistan after named M.Ulugbek. It was created within the framework of the project of UNESCO office in Tashkent.

This book is recommended to the publication by scientifically-methodical council of the Republican Center of Education of the Ministry of Popular Schooling of Republic Uzbekistan. The manual is twice published with help of UNESCO office in Tashkent and National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO (in Russian and Uzbek languages in 1000 copies everyone). The book first of all is designed for teachers of high schools, lyceums and colleges. Also it can be useful to listeners of institutes of improvement of professional skill of teachers, for lecturers of universities and pedagogical institutes and all persons, who interested in questions of education and interrelation of problems of education and development.
The manual consists of two parts. In the first part it is short described:

  • history of occurrence and an essence of concept “Sustainable development”;
  • bases of the concept, the purpose and tasks of the Education for a sustainable development, as base of construction of the steady future are revealed;
  • methodical bases of Education for a sustainable development are considered;
  • some themes related to problems of stability of development are sorted out;
  • the separate chapter of the manual is devoted to the general principles of integration of ideas of a sustainable development in training process.

Concrete examples of integration of ideas of a sustainable development in curriculums finish the first part of the manual – there are 9 developed lessons on interdisciplinary themes, they can be included in different school subjects and at different levels of training.

The second part of the manual contains the collection of tasks, questions for reflexion and exercises for pupils.

Authors have shown in the book, how and what questions and exercises, it is possible to prepare to train children of the theory and to practical skills of a steady life in a society. This manual is call to change current educational programs and teachers activities according to needs of sustainable future.
Both parts of the manual contain the list of recommended sources for study of Sustainable Development issues.

Within 2008-2010 authors of the book have spent 11 training-seminars for teachers of schools, lyceums, colleges and lecturers of Universities of Uzbekistan. In trainings-seminars has taken part over 200 teachers, methodologists, representatives of the different ministries and departments, the public educational organizations, representatives of mass media from all Republic of Uzbekistan.
