The First National Forum “The Role of Information Resource Centers in the 21st Century Education: Media and Information Literacy for formal and non-formal learning” was organized by the UNESCO Tashkent Office from 18-19 December 2013 in close cooperation with the Ministry of Public Education , the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan, the Republican Scientific-Pedagogical Library, the World Bank and the Goethe-Institute with support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Uzbekistan.
The aim of the forum was to identify promising areas for further improvement and development of information and library services for users, provide access to the general population to the combined information and library resources on the basis of modern information and communication technologies and expand access to educational and information resources.
In an era of‘knowledge societies’ there is a need not only to increase access to information, but also to provide the users with the necessary skills to turn the information available into knowledge. Libraries are an important platform for access and use of information and knowledge. It is therefore crucial for the people working at libraries to be media and information literate so as to be able to provide the necessary support and guidance to the users of library services.
