Continuing ESD after 2014
The Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) focusses on action on the ground. The GAP was launched at the World Conference on ESD in November 2014 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Based on countries’ commitment at the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) to strengthen ESD beyond the end of its Decade (2005-2014), UNESCO, in consultation with Member States and relevant stakeholders, developed the Global Action Programme on ESD.
The GAP was endorsed by UNESCO’s 37th General Conference (November 2013) as the follow-up to the UN Decade of ESD. It will also be brought to the attention of the UN General Assembly in 2014 for consideration and appropriate action.
The GAP and further outcomes of the World Conference will inform the deliberations of the World Education Forum to be held from 19 to 22 May 2015 in Incheon, Republic of Korea, which will aim to reach agreement on a new education agenda post-2015 and to adopt a global framework for action for the years to come.
