UNESCO mobilises for Pakistan flood response
UNESCO is taking part in United Nations efforts to bring emergency relief and longer term assistance to Pakistan after the catastrophic floods that have devastated the country.
As a first step, UNESCO sent a team of flood-management experts to consult with national authorities. The Organization has also launched a site for donations (see below).
23 August: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and of its Abolition
For this 12th commemoration, UNESCO participated in events in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and Trinidad and Tobago.
In addition, UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register is highlighting archival collections related to slavery.
World Heritage Committee inscribes 21 new sites on UNESCO World Heritage List
The 34th session of the World Heritage Committee met in Brasilia from 25 July to 3 August to consider nominations for the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger. The Committee inscribed 21 new sites, including 15 cultural, 5 natural and 1 mixed properties, making a total of 911 sites inscribed on the List. Four sites were placed on the Danger list.

As nations prepare for the High-level Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG Summit) at the United Nations on 20-22 September, UNESCO looks at how rapid advances in education can help achieve all the MDGs.
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova visits flood-stricken zones in Pakistan
Ms Bokova visited flooded areas, met with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and other national authorities and took part in a press conference of United Nations Chief Executive Officers during her visit to Pakistan on 31 August.
