Irina Bokova underscores that culture is a strategic resource for development in a lecture at Sciences Po in Paris
On Wednesday, 6 October 2010, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova delivered an inaugural lecture at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) in the presence of PSIA Rector Ghassan Salame and Richard Descoing, Director of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).
Relating the topic of culture and development to the outcome of the recently held MDG Summit in New York, she emphasized that [...] “the financial crisis had fostered the illusion of development being founded exclusively on economic or financial factors. But in order to be efficient and sustainable, development should incorporate cultural factors. UNESCO had therefore appealed to the UN to recognize the importance of cultural diversity and cultural industries as essential levers of development”.
