Irina Bokova reaffirms UNESCO's commitment to ALADI's founding principles
On 13 September 2012, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova was received by Luis Caselli, President of ALADI, Association Latinoamericana de Integracion. She reaffirmed to the Committee of Representatives of ALADI, UNESCO's committment to the founding principles of ALADI and its commitment to deepen the integration of Latin America. ALADI promotes the creation of an area of economic preferences in the region, aiming towards the creation of a Latin American common market. UNESCO cooperates actively with ALADI and has a bilateral agreement in the field of Small and Medium Enterprises.
During the visit, a joint program of scholarships involving UNESCO was launched and the first five scholarships for 2012- 2013 were delivered by the Director-General of UNESCO, along with Mr Rodolfo Silveira, President of the Agency. The fellowships are in the field of Sanitary Engineering, within the framework of the Agreement signed between the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education of Delft and the Agency. At this time, a MOU was signed between UNESCO and the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) to establish formal cooperation in the field of sciences and to strengthen the capacity in water resources. Also present at this ceremony was the Minister of Education and Culture, H.E. Mr. Ricardo Ehrlich and Mr Jorge Rucks, National Director of the Environment.
