Irina Bokova takes part in the High-level Steering Committee of Education First
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova is in New York from 30 to 31 July to take part in the inaugural meeting of the High-level Steering Committee of Education First, the UN Secretary-General's Global Initiative on Education, to be launched on 26 September in the margins of the General Assembly.
The purpose of the Steering Committee is to provide strategic guidance to the Secretary-General on how to raise the political profile of education on the development agenda and mobilize stronger public and private support.
In consultation with UN agencies and other key partners, UNESCO was entrusted with setting the vision of the Initiative that addresses persistent challenges and taps the potential of education to make development sustainable.
The Initiative will focus on three priority areas: getting every child into school; ensuring the quality of education, and making education a transformative force in pursuit of global citizenship.
The Director-General will serve as Executive Secretary of the 15-member Steering Committee, which includes HH Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, HE The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu, HH Aga Khan IV, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Global Education Mr Gordon Brown, the Executive heads of the five EFA convening UN agencies as well as representatives from other organizations, foundations, the private sector and civil society.
During her visit to New York, the Director-General will hold meetings with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the recently-appointed Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, and the President of the General Assembly.
