The Director-General meets H.E. Mr Boni Yayi, President de la Republic of Benin
The Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova, met H.E. Mr Boni Yayi, President of the Republic of Benin, on Friday, 8 February 2013, during his official visit to Paris. The meeting was yet another opportunity for the Director-General and President Yayi to note their convergent views on the central role of education for sustainable development.
President Yayi expressed his country’s keen interest in being one of the State Champions in the global “Education First” initiative launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, who appointed the Director-General Executive Secretary of the Steering Committee. The goals of the initiative were to put every child in school, improve the quality of learning and foster global citizenship.
The President of Benin reasserted his country’s and his support for UNESCO’s mission. He again commended action taken by the Director-General.
Thanking the President for the trust and support that he had always given to the Organization, the Director-General assured President Boni Yayi of the Organization’s and of her will to work with Benin in its various development activities.
The situation in Mali, too, was mentioned by the two parties. The Director-General commended the role played in that connection by President Boni Yayi, both during his presidency of the African Union and on his country’s behalf. She informed him of UNESCO’s current and future action for the safeguarding and reconstruction of the cultural heritage.
