Rio +20: Irina Bokova addresses the first High Level Roundtable

On 20 June, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova took part in the first High Level Roundtable held at the Rio +20 Conference. The Roundtable was held under the theme "looking at the way forward in implementing the expected outcomes of the Conference".

"We must define clear goals and craft coherent tools to reach them," said the Director-General. "For UNESCO, this requires making the most of the transformative power of education, the sciences, culture and media".

The Director-General addressed the major themes guiding this High Level Roundtable. "First," she argued, "we must integrate new Sustainable Development Goals into the post-2015 agenda in ways that complement and build on Millennium Development Goals. Future SDGs must include Education for Sustainable Development, Science Technology and Innovation, Water, Oceans, Culture and Communication. Benchmarking and capacity building are essential in this process. Second, to build green economies, we must invest in human and social capital. Education for Sustainable Development and Technical and Vocational Education and Training have a particular role to play, especially for youth to acquire the skills needed for green jobs. Third, we wish that the science-policy interface is integrated more strongly in the sustainable development agenda. Fourth, science and knowledge are crucial for a sustainable management of our ocean. Last but not least, the important role of culture for sustainable development has to be reaffirmed. Culture is an important economic factor, creating numerous jobs."

The Roundtable was co-chaired by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and H.E. Armando Emilio GUEBUZA, President of the Republic of Mozambique. Several Heads of State, Ministers, Heads of UN Entities and representatives of civil society took part. Among the distinguihed discussants were H.E. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Wen Jiabao, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, H.E. Baburam Bhattarai, Prime Minster of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, Personal Representative of His Majesty the King of Thailand and Mr. Donald Kaberuka, President, African Development Bank.
