Senegal: The Director-General Meets President Macky Sall
On 14 February, during an official visit to Senegal, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, met His Excellency Mr. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal. The President welcomed the long and fruitful cooperation between UNESCO and his country and congratulated the Director-General for her work at the head of the Organization.
The Director-General commended Senegal's commitment to education, to which a significant portion of the national budget is dedicated, placing the country above the continental average. The discussions continued on efforts in literacy for women and girls, progress in terms of gender equality, the development of technical and vocational training for the employability of youth, culture and its link to development. Training young people and women has a central place in President Macky Sall’s programme.
The two sides underlined the importance of consolidating achievements and moving forward, especially in the context of the post-2015 Agenda.
With regards to the situation in Mali, President Sall and the Director-General condemned the destruction of ancient monuments and cultural heritage, which beyond Mali, is a great loss for humanity as a whole. Both raised their voices against all forms of extremism and intolerance of any kind.
The reconstruction and restoration of destroyed heritage are one of the best ways to respond, said the Director-General, informing the President of the Day of Solidarity with Mali.
