UNESCO Director-General pays tribute to Antoinette Fouque, women's rights activist

Launch of Universal Dictionary of creative women in UNESCO Paris. November 2013

Irina Bokova praised Antoinette Fouque, a pioneer of the feminist movement, an editor and essayist, and the co-founder of the Movement for the Liberation of Women, who passed on February 20, 2014.

“Antoinette Fouque was and remains one of the strongest voices calling out for human rights and those of women. She also always raised the banner for equality through culture and literature, and we were side by side just a few weeks ago to launch the Universal Dictionary of Creative Women.

With her passing, we lose an intellectual and an activist, whose message echoed fully with the mandate of UNESCO. Her death, a few days before International Women's Day, on March 8, is a call to action for all of us to continue leading this struggle" said the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.
