UNESCO Director-General condemns destruction of Sayyeda Manoubia mausoleum in Tunis
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova firmly condemned the profanation and sacking of a mausoleum on the outskirts of Tunis dedicated to Sayyeda Manoubia, one of the most revered Sufi saints.
The Director-General urged Tunisian authorities to take every possible measure to protect cultural sites and places of historical significance for the identity of the Tunisian people.
“Attacking such places of historical importance is a crime against the Tunisian people, who have always distinguished themselves for their tolerance and respect for the diversity of religious practices and beliefs,” the Director-General said. She also stressed the essential role of civil society in the preservation of Tunisia’s exceptional heritage for the future generations.
