UNESCO’s Director-General on official visit to Senegal
The Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs Irina BOKOVA, is coming to Dakar, Senegal on an official visit from 13-15 February 2013. It is her second official visit to this country, since her election in September 2009 as the head of UNESCO.
Mrs BOKOVA will meet with the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System and UNDP Resident Representative, Mrs Bintou DJIBO. She will also have a discussion with the representatives of United Nations Agencies in Senegal and with UNESCO’s staff in Dakar.
On 14 February 2013 at 10:45am the Director-General will officially launch of the new Education for All regional coordination structure for sub-Saharan Africa. The launch will take place at UNESCO’s Regional Office in Dakar in the presence of high-level education officials in Senegal, representatives of Education for All partners and United Nations Agencies, as well as representatives of major financial and technical partners including NGOs, civil society and the private sector.
The new mechanism aims at facilitating the assistance to the countries in their final push towards the EFA goals by 2015.
This launch will be followed by a press conference.
In the afternoon, the Director-General will go to Pikine, a poor suburb outside Dakar. to visit the Literacy Project for Young Girls and Women (PAJEF).
Launched in January 2012, the PAJEF project is implemented in partnership with the multinational company Procter&Gamble. Its objective is to promote literacy for 40.000 women and young girls in seven regions of Senegal by associating classic learning methods with an offer based on information and communication technologies (ICTs). To this day, more than 250 literacy classes have opened in many villages and learners use mobile phones and the Internet to gain new skills.
Mrs Bokova's programme also includes a series of meetings with the Ministers concerned by UNESCO’s fields of competence, as well as a visit to the IFAN museum.
The visit will end with an audience with the President of Senegal, Macky Sall on Friday, 15 February, followed by a press conference at the presidential Palace.
