Director-General’s first day of official visit to Cuba
To start her visit, Irina Bokova visited the University of Arts of Cuba (ISA), Instituto Superior de Arte, established in 1976 by the Government as a school of arts, under the Ministry of Culture.
The Director-General was greeted by the Minister of Culture, Mr Rafael Bernal Alemany, and the Rector of the University of Arts, Mr Rolando Gonzalez Patricio. The Permanent Delegate of Cuba to UNESCO, Her Exc. Ambassador María de los Ángeles Florez Prida, the President of the Cuban National Commission to UNESCO Mr Juan Antonio Fernández Palacios and the Director of UNESCO’s office in Havana, Mr Herman Van-Hooff were also present. A musical performance by the students was organized to welcome the Director-General to the University. The Minister introduced the school and spoke about the important historical collaboration between UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture.
Following a visit of the premises, the Director-General held meetings with the Minister of Culture and the Rector of the University. The Minister elaborated further on the important work being carried out by UNESCO in Cuba, and underlined the excellent work and cooperation undertaken with the the UNESCO Office. He spoke also about the mission of the university to develop an integrated and continuous university education in the spheres of artistic creation and cultural management.
Following the visit to the University of Arts, the Director-General visited the UNESCO Havana Office and met with the personnel and staff of the office. During a meeting with the programme and administrative staff, interesting exchanges were held on the subject of working and communicating from an intersectorial perspective, which was said to be a challenge at times in Headquarters but an automatic practice in the field.
