Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand welcomes the Director-General on the First Day of her visit
The Director-General was honoured to be granted an audience with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Empowerment of Minority Children through Education and Culture, at the former residence and now museum of Her Majesty Queen Sri Savarindira, the Queen Grandmother of Thailand.
Her Royal Highness took the Director-General on a personal tour of the palace, stopping in each room, and sharing stories of the Queen Grandmother and her engagement for education for all, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. The museum is situated on lush grounds surrounded by the city centre.
The visit was followed by a private dinner with Her Royal Highness, where discussions followed on the strength of UNESCO's cooperation with Thailand and the need to develop new ways to promote more equitable access to good quality education and skills in all regions of the world. The director general expressed her deep gratitude to Her Royal Highness for her lifelong engagement to promoting the values and objectives of UNESCO, and looked forward to ever stronger cooperation.
In 2012, UNESCO is honoured to be associated with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Her Majesty Queen Sri Savarindira, the Queen Grandmother of Thailand.
