On the occasion of the International Day in Memory of Victims of the Holocaust, UNESCO organizes an international symposium in order to explore the relevance of education on the Holocaust in a globalized world.
Holocaust education has significantly grown in the past 20 years, after decades of struggle to bring to light all aspects of the genocide perpetrated against the Jewish people during the Second World War. Much remains to be accomplished in order to fully integrate this theme in school curricula; however, one cannot but notice that Holocaust education is now reaching beyond the borders of the lands where the killings and deportations took place. The United Nations, UNESCO and other international organizations as well as specialized institutions such as Yad Vashem, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Shoah Memorial play a crucial role in promoting and diffusing this teaching in a globalized world. Why has it become so important to talk about this genocide even in regions far away from the places where it was perpetrated? How can Holocaust Education contribute to fight against racism and antisemitism and play a role in the prevention of mass atrocities and genocides? This symposium organized by UNESCO on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Victims of the Holocaust will try to bring answers to some of the universal issues borne by this history and will explore what is at stake in teaching about the Holocaust in these times of globalization.
