UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova will designate Mr Metin Arditi as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador during the ceremony to be held at UNESCO HQ on Tuesday, 18 December 2012
Metin Arditi could fairly be described as a modern-day Renaissance man. Successful businessman, academic, biographer, essayist and novelist, the Geneva-based Arditi is also a philanthropist and chairman of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the premier orchestra in French-speaking Switzerland. Born in Ankara, Turkey in 1945, Arditi was sent as a seven-year-old to a boarding school near Lausanne. He studied there for 11 years before attending EPFL, Lausanne’s Federal Institute of Technology, where he earned degrees in engineering and physics. Armed with this scientific background, he headed to Stanford University, where he received an MBA.

Arditi, a Swiss citizen, has maintained a strong link with EPFL, mixing academic activities with a successful business career that started with a stint between 1970 and 1972 with consultants McKinsey & Co. in Zurich, Milan and Paris. He then founded Codev, a company for industrial development, and Financière Arditi.

In 1988, he created a non-profit foundation that offers prizes and scholarships to students at EPFL and the University of Geneva. The Fondation Arditi also supports musical institutions, including the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Geneva Conservatory. The foundation acquired and renovated a 750-seat concert hall, now known as the Auditorium Fondation Arditi, which it donated to the canton of Geneva.

Arditi has additionally developed a reputation as a man of letters, starting with books he penned in the late 1990s on subjects as various as French writer La Fontaine, Machiavelli and German philosopher Nietzsche. As well, he is an award-winning novelist after his first novel, Victoria-Hall, was published to acclaim in 2004.

A member of various boards, he is chairman of EPFL’s cultural council and a visiting professor. During the 2010-2011 academic year he was official artist in residence at the federal institute. His latest project, a reflection of his strong personal interest in music, is the creation of an educational foundation called Instruments for Peace. The result of a friendship between Arditi and Elias Sanbar, the Ambassador of Palestine to Unesco, the foundation brings musical education to kids in the Middle East.
