Seminar on Gender in Disaster Risk Reduction
© Y. Wibowo
Flooding (Jakarta, Indonesia)
The main objectives of the seminar are to share good practices and lessons learnt demonstrating how gender aspects can be successfully integrated into Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) operations; to discuss various experiences and identify existing gaps in mainstreaming gender equality considerations in DRR activities.
Disasters triggered by natural hazards such as earthquake, flood, drought, tropical storms are on the rise. More women than men die from natural hazards. Considering UNESCO’s mandate in DRR within various programmes of the Organization and its Global Priority on Gender Equality, UNESCO is uniquely positioned to integrate gender and DRR, however mainstreaming it still remains challenging at activity/project level. The seminar is intended to strengthen capacities of UNESCO staff to deliver on these two elements.
