Intangible Cultural Heritage Awareness-raising Workshop in Yap (Federated States of Micronesia)

Yap Day©FSM/HPO

The Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia (FMS) adopted a resolution to ratify the 2003 Convention for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in November 2012. The instrument of ratification from FSM was received by UNESCO in February 2013, making Micronesia the sixth Pacific State Party to the 2003 Convention.
The FSM Committee on Education identified the advantages of ratifying the 2003 Convention, including: i) ensuring the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage at the international and national levels regarding continuity, transmission, development and scientific study; ii) making a socio-cultural contribution to the sustainable development of the country; iii) strengthening both local and national identity, ensuring openness towards other cultures and respect for cultural diversity; iv) fostering socio-cultural continuity between past, present and future generations; v) promoting and guiding forms of tourism which respect the intangible cultural heritage as a source of identity and social cohesion; and vi) benefiting from a network of States Parties among which there is a genuine international cooperation, assistance and exchange of expertise.

In this connection, the Yap State Government in cooperation with Yap Historic Preservation Office will organize an Awareness-raising Workshop for Intangible Cultural Heritage. The workshop aims at providing an opportunity for government officers, NGOs, community leaders, and ICH custodians to have a better understanding of the 2003 Convention and its implementation and discuss a strategy and action plan for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in Yap.
