Biosphere Reserve Bañados del Este (Uruguay)
The Director General of the Manicouagan - Uapishka Biosphere Reserve, Mr. Jean-Philippe L. Messier, will visit the Bañados del Este Biosphere Reserve (Uruguay) on 16 March 2013, the only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the country.
Mr. Messier is invited by the Regional Bureau for Science of UNESCO in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO Office in Montevideo), and will meet responsible experts of PROBIDES (institution responsible for Biosphere Reserves management), with whom they will perform an aerial tour of the area, visit different cities part of the Biosphere Reserve, such as Castillos and Cabo Polonio, as well as specific conservation experiences. This will be an opportunity for both Biosphere Reserve to consider possibilities for mutual cooperation and exchange.
Designated by UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in 1976, the Biosphere Reserve Bañados del Este comprises a complex network of marshes (wetlands), estuaries and lagoons located on the southeast of Uruguay which is parallel to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean (between 32 ° and 35 ° latitude and 53 ° S and 55 ° W longitude). It is an area known for its high biodiversity, particularly the birds found there, as its strategic location is an important site for migratory species on the continent. It also has a coastline of about 200 km, with long beaches shaped by waves and long shore currents.
The particular natural wealth of the area, the beauty of its landscapes and a rich tradition in the use of their resources offer interesting perspectives for the development of productive activities and tourism based on the rational use of resources.
