Assessment Workshop of the Level of Inclusiveness of Lebanese Public Policies Towards Young Women and Men Living with Disabilities

UNESCO Office in Beirut, jointly with the National Commission for UNESCO in Lebanon, organises a one-day national workshop which aims to launch a participatory review of the policy towards young women and men with disabilities among national multi-stakeholders. More specifically, it aims to share the policy review methodology, preliminary policy context analysis and policy recommendations.

In 2013, UNESCO is implementing an inter-regional programme of Assessment of the Level of Inclusiveness of Public Policies in nine countries, including three in the Arab region (Lebanon, Jordan and Morocco).

In Lebanon, the programme on “Assessment of the Inclusive Dimension of Public Policies” supports national efforts to assess, compare and reform national policy and regulatory frameworks in view of increasing their inclusiveness and social sustainability. The assessment will focus on the specific rights holders group: young women and men living with disabilities.

During the workshop, the focus will be on assessing the policy and regulatory frameworks and making social inclusion an overarching goal and a core component of all government policy and planning processes. Its final product will be the existence of harmonised national policies and regulations that are conducive to inclusive societies and guarantee equal access to opportunities for all.
Building inclusive societies is a longstanding need and commitment of the international community.

In 1995, the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen defined inclusive society as a society for all, in which every individual has an active role to play. Such a community is based on fundamental values of equity, equality, social justice, human rights and freedoms, as well as on the principles of embracing diversity. It is also equipped with appropriate mechanisms that enable its citizens to participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives, and ultimately shape their common future.
