Informal meeting on UNESCO’s work related to culture in the post-2015 agenda
In the context of the United Nations General Assembly Thematic Debate on Culture and Development that is being convened by Mr Vuk Jeremić, President of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly, at the United Nations in New York on 12 June 2013, UNESCO’s Director-General will chair an informal meeting on UNESCO’s work related to culture in the post-2015 agenda with Ministers present in the UNGA Thematic Debate on Culture and Development.
As the sole United Nations agency with a mandate for culture, UNESCO has been leading high-profile advocacy on culture and development. These efforts have led to the growing recognition of the enabling role of culture for development at the global and national levels, as testified to by the adoption of UN General Assembly Resolutions A/RES/66/208 and A/RES/65/166, adopted in 2010 and 2011 respectively, and more recently the Hanzghou Declaration adopted by the International Congress entitled “Culture: Key to Sustainable Development”, held in Hangzhou (China) in May 2013.
The informal meeting will be an opportunity for exchange views with Ministers of Culture and Foreign Affairs as well as high representatives attending the UNGA thematic debate on culture and development on 12 June 2013.
