Arid soils in West Africa
The workshop to be held in Accra, Ghana, from 17 to 20 September 2013, is organized by UNESCO, in collaboration with INDEPTH-Network and the African University College of Communication (AUCC). It will mark the first step of a project aiming to link existing national and regional research networks on climate change and to enhance the capacity of the Sahel and the West Africa communities to adapt to climate change from their own perspective and by using local tools.
UNESCO, working in close partnership with the INDEPTH-Network and AUCC, designed this project to strengthen the capacities of local communities to mitigate/adapt to the consequences of climate change, using Burkina Faso (Sahel) and Ghana (West Africa) as case studies and core sites of project activities.
The workshop will culminate in a draft outcome report, which will provide among other things a mapping of existing national and regional scientific research networks, which are active in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Furthermore, the workshop will provide for a special session during which researchers in the field will share information with media stakeholders with a view to broaden their knowledge of the issue and to improve the information available for the general public about the consequences of climate change.
