CETIC.br – Contributing to building inclusive knowledge Societies through information and communication
The Regional Centre of Studies for the Development of the Information Society under the auspices of UNESCO (CETIC.br) is a newly established UNESCO Category II Centre, hosted by the Brazilian Network Information Centre (NIC.br) in São Paulo, Brazil. This mini-conference will present the Centre’s mission and its main activities being carried out in the Latin America Region and Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa.
CETIC.br was created in 2005 and since then has been working towards measuring the information and knowledge society in Brazil, based on a solid survey process for the production of internationally comparable statistical indicators that evaluate the access, use and impact of ICT in different segments of society.
In 2012, CETIC.br further expanded its scope of action by becoming a UNESCO Category II centre aimed at “contributing to building inclusive knowledge Societies through information and communication” with focus on Latin America and the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa. Thus, the Centre´s priority is to develop capacity-building in such regions, focusing on the survey methodology for ICT indicators. Disseminating international frameworks form measuring ICT and best-practices worldwide are essential for strengthening the development of ICT indicators.
This is another objective of the Centre: to host a knowledge centre for the information and knowledge society, aimed at disseminating and sharing relevant multilingual information on ICT indicators by consolidating a Clearing house on ICT survey methodology that is accessible to all.
Equally important is to stimulate the production of innovate ideas among experts through a “laboratory of ideas”, aimed at producing qualitative and quantitative future scenarios for the Internet and anticipating upcoming challenges related to the social impact of ICTs and create a digital political agenda to guide the design of public policies towards a knowledge society.
Finally, the Centre will stimulate the debate on the emerging theme of culture and ethics on the Internet by exploring discussions on the ethical dimensions of the Internet and its social implications.
