On 20 March 2014 UNESCO’s Director-General, Mrs Irina Bokova and H. E. Mr Omar Mesa Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Uruguay to UNESCO will sign an agreement for the establishment of a Regional Centre for Groundwater Management for Latin America and the Caribbean in Montevideo, Uruguay, as a category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO.
The proposed Centre will provide facilities and opportunities for advanced research on aquifer systems and groundwater resources management for scientists from Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) countries.

The UNESCO Regional Centre will contribute to strengthen the technical, social and educational development of the region to enable a better understanding and management of groundwater, as well as promote and disseminate the results of scientific research in this area. The Centre will be committed to promote exchanges between water managers and technical experts working in the management of surface water and groundwater.

This technical expertise will serve to strengthen decisions taken by those authorities responsible for the management of water resources in general and groundwater in particular.
The purpose of the Centre is two-fold: to strengthen national capacity in support of the sustainable management of aquifers in the country, and to address the needs and requirements jointly identified with other countries of the region by working in mutual cooperation.

The Centre shall execute and implement project proposals on groundwater management at national and regional level.
