Young Indonesians from Siberut Island have created a multimedia centre with the support from the IFCD.

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Youth Training on Media and Civic Participation will bring together young women and men from the region to share youth experiences in promoting the culture of peace, to develop practical action plans and explore the opportunities that new media provide to enhance youth participation and civic engagement.

Around 100 young participants, motivated to work for peace in their own institutions and communities, are expected to join the 5-day training that will be held from 21 to 25 August 2014 in Bali (Indonesia).

The Project is part of the Indonesian Fund-In-Trust Project “Global Media Forum” that aims to define the role of media in the post-2015 Development Agenda. In this context, the objective of the training is to enhance engagement of young women and men in the media.

The training is organized by the UNESCO Office in Jakarta in coordination with other UNESCO Field Offices in the region and the Government of Indonesia.

Participants will review cross-cultural aspects of peace education; traditional and new media for civic engagement and participation; and development of action plans. After the training, participants will have completed action plans for their own follow-up. The trainees are expected to engage in activities in their own institutions and communities after the training to promote the values and knowledge acquired.

UNESCO recognizes youth as equal partners and actors for development and peace, including through their mobilization and engagement in the media.
