Cândido Costa Pinto, 1945

A travelling exhibition on the history of fado, from its birth in nineteenth-century Lisbon to the present day, which uses posters, photographs, sheet music, musical instruments, show costumes and accessories, and so on, to illustrate the path to recognition of Lisbon’s urban song tradition.
Records, radio programmes, cinema and television heralded the internationalization of fado from the latter half of the twentieth century with Amália Rodrigues, and this form of singing has continued to flourish and is now held to be a “registered trademark” of Portugal, an icon of Portuguese identity and culture in the world.
Fado is a Portuguese musical genre characterized by a song with melancholic themes accompanied by stringed instruments.
