The main objective of the meeting is to promote the principles of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH).
It will focus on vital issues related to ICH preservation such as involvement of tradition bearers and practitioners, drawing up national inventories of intangible culture heritage and its transmission to future generations.

Attention will be paid, in particular, to increasing awareness on the importance of safeguarding ICH and promoting living heritage through strengthening capacities of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation whilst involving local communities into the process of safeguarding.

This meeting is organized as a follow-up to the UNESCO Capacity-Building Training for Trainers on Intangible Cultural Heritage (14-18 March 2011, Sofia, Bulgaria) and UNESCO Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Sub-regional Training Workshop on Community-based Standard Inventorying of Intangible Cultural Heritage (23-25 February 2009, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan). Its aim is to strengthen national capacities of cluster countries in the field of safeguarding of ICH, in particular with a view to developing inventories in the context of the implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention. The event will be conducted in partnership with the Institute of Arts, Ethnography and Folklore named after K. Krapiva and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and in consultation with the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Section.

This event will welcome representatives of the Ministries of Culture and research institutions, responsible for preservation of ICH from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation, as well as local communities’ members.
