Exhibition « Documenting Living Heritage: 12 photographers in Kenya »
© UNESCO / Bernice Macharia
The exhibition which is organized within the framework of the Festival of Cultural Diversity, presents the works of 12 professional Kenyan photographers coming from different backgrounds. The photographs focus on the daily life of the Khayega community of the Kakamega area of Western Kenya and Nairobi craftsmen.
The objective of this exhibition is to strengthen the capacity of professional photographers by exploring different approaches to documenting intangible cultural heritage. By doing so it is hoped that these photographers will continue to contribute to raising awareness – through photography – about the importance of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The 2003 Convention, which was adopted in 2003 and entered into force in 2006, aims at safeguarding intangible heritage expressions such as oral traditions, performing arts, rituals, social practices, festive events, knowledge about nature, and traditional craftsmanship.
