Youth and peace, by Valente Ngwenya Malangatana

Celebration of Portuguese Language Day at UNESCO by and on the initiative of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), with two exhibitions, a display of literary works and a concert.


Exhibition of paintings by the Mozambican artist Valente Ngwenya Malangatana, deceased in 2011. Renowned for his huge canvases and frescos of colourful crowds, he was also recognized as a ceramicist, engraver, sculptor and poet. Designated a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 1997, he donated one of his works, entitled Youth and Peace, to the Organization, where it is on display.

Paintings by pupils in the Portuguese Section of the International Lycée at Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Display and sale of works by Portuguese-speaking authors.

At 6.30 p.m. speeches by representatives of CPLP (group formed in 1996 by seven countries, namely Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and joined by Timor-Leste in 2002).

Concert by Cape Verdean artiste Jorge Humberto, accompanied by his two musicians.
