As part of the implementation of the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, the UNESCO Dakar Office is organizing a working group for the identification of joint actions to combat illicit trafficking of cultural property (ITCP) in the Sahel region from 18-20 July 2017 in Dakar.
This meeting aims to present and validate a strategic information document providing an overview of the ITCP in the sub region. Furthermore, these three days of work will result in the mapping of the phenomenon and the development of a concept note, which will be presented to potential financial partners on the last day of the meeting.

Participants will include Directors of Cultural Heritage and Museums from 5 countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal, as well as other actors such as customs and police, ICOM, Interpol, and cultural heritage experts. UN partners such as MINUSMA, UNODC, WCO, and UNOWAS are also invited to participate.

The document to be presented during this meeting was developed on the basis of the results of a consultation of States Parties to examine whether and to what extent specific measures had been taken following the recommendations of the subregional workshop organized by UNESCO on "Capacity-building and awareness-raising in the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property in West Africa" in September 2012 in Dakar. The workshop brought together some 40 experts and professionals from fifteen countries of the sub region, representatives of Ministries of Culture, museum professionals, lawyers and police officers, including Interpol national offices and customs officers.
