The 2017/8 Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM) Report will be launched at a major event in London, United Kingdom on 24 October 2017 involving Ministers, academics, civil society, donor partners and youth. Grounded in the evidenced-based findings of the 2017/8 GEM Report, the aim of the launch event will be to:

• Inform policy makers of different approaches to accountability being used in different contexts, their benefits and disadvantages.
• Share key evidence-based recommendations from the Report relevant to national, regional and global policy makers.
• Expand the GEM Report’s profile amongst key education stakeholders and reaffirm the Report as the core evidence based advocacy tool for monitoring progress towards the education related targets in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In 2017, the second report in the GEM Report series will continue its assessment of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal on education (SDG4) and its 10 targets, as well as other related education targets in the SDG agenda. It will also investigate accountability in education, analyzing how all relevant stakeholders can provide education more effectively, efficiently and equitably. The Report examines different accountability mechanisms that are used to hold governments, schools, teachers, parents, students, civil society, the international community, and the private sector accountable for inclusive, equitable and quality education. By analysing which policies make accountability work or fail, and which external factors impact on their success, the 2017/8 GEM Report will conclude with concrete recommendations that will help build stronger education systems.
