Logo "2011 International Year for people of African Descent"
Within the framework of the Transatlantic Slave Trade Education Project (TST) and the International Year for People of African Descent 2011, a three-day ASPnet TST Teacher Professional Development Workshop will be held in Accra, Ghana, 11-13 August 2011. This Workshop is part of the Ghana/Trinidad and Tobago exchange visit and organized by the International Coordination of the UNESCO Associated Schools in close cooperation with UNESCO Accra Office and the Ghana National Commission for UNESCO. It is made possible thanks to a contribution of the U.S. Department of State.
The training will contribute to strengthening the quality of teaching about slavery and the slave trade among teachers of the UNESCO Associated Schools.
Special emphasis will be placed on the following objectives:
(1) To provide a platform of exchange between teachers on the implemented school projects during the recent academic year;
(2) To provide training activities on selected themes, which will strengthen the quality of education on the Slave Trade (such as teaching the Slave Trade through drama and arts, linking TST to contemporary slavery, building international school partnerships in the TST, teaching the TST from an African perspective);
(3) To contribute to a UNESCO/ASPnet resource website on the TST, adapted to the needs of teachers;
(4) To enhance stable cooperative programmes and school-based student and teacher exchanges, particularly with regards to TST activities.
Participants will include 15 teachers who are participating in the Ghana/Trinidad and Tobago teacher and student exchange programme, with an additional 5 international teachers from different regions invited to share their experience from the international perspective.
