EU Conference on Youth, Peace and Security - Promoting Youth in Peacebuilding

In the framework its collaboration with the European Union, UNESCO has been working with the European External Action Service (EEAS) in the preparation of the EU High Level Conference on Youth, Peace and Security “Promoting Youth in Peacebuilding’’ to be held on 23-24 May in Brussels.

The overarching goals of Conference are to further reinforce momentum in the EU implementation of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, foster EU policy on Youth, Peace and Security, promote EU-United Nations cooperation on youth in peacebuilding, while enhancing the visibility of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda.

Specific objectives of the conference are to

(1) provide an innovative platform for EU-level policy dialogue on Youth, Peace and Security through engaging youth from and working with the EU and all other stakeholders in a level playing field
(2) lay the foundations of a sustainable EU community of practice on Youth, Peace and Security, including EU actors along the internal-external nexus
(3) give more concrete definition to further accelerating the EU implementation of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda
(4) raise the awareness of political and public audiences, within and outside the EU, about the Youth, Peace and Security agenda (5) create further impetus for EU-UN cooperation on youth in peacebuilding.

UNESCO is involved in the preparation of this event (content, agenda, format, etc.).

UNESCO is organizing two of the four panels of the conference (Panel II: Young people innovating for peace; Panel III - organized in collaboration with World Vision: Empowering young people to prevent/counter violent extremism). UNESCO has also organized participation of four NET-MED Youth members in 4 different sessions:

- Nour Kaabi (Tunisia) – Opening session
- Elyes Guermazi (Tunisia) – Panel III on Empowering young people to prevent/counter violent extremism
- Majd Beltaji (Palestine) – Panel IV on Protecting the human rights of youth
- Sami Hourani (Jordan) – Closing session
