In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) and tasked the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) to coordinate the commemoration of the Day.
For the third edition of WTAD in 2018, the theme will focus on Target (c) of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 which aims at reducing disaster-related economic losses in relation to global gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.

In this regard, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and UNISDR will organize a High Level Panel Discussion as a side event during the 205th session of the UNESCO Executive Board to discuss policies and practices to reduce tsunami risks in countries highly dependent on tourism revenues.

The event will take place in Room IV at UNESCO Headquarters. Simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Spanish will be provided.
