Teaching and learning responsible transformative engagement - Expert meeting

The Experts Meeting explores how Global Citizenship Education (GCED) can empower students to become engaged citizens, acting for effective and responsible change at the local, national and global levels.

Based on Target 4.7 of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Education, UNESCO – through Global Citizenship Education (GCED) – seeks to empower learners to assume active, responsible and non-violent roles to tackle challenges at the local, national and global levels, through forms of engagement for transformative purposes. These forms of engagement may take various channels (civic, social, activism, leading possibly to institutional involvement and political parties) and may be related to a wide variety of fields, i.e. political, social, environmental.

While there is a large of body of literature on citizenship/civic education, there is a lack of clarity on the meaning of ‘responsible transformative engagement’ by citizens in relation to education, and across a range of contexts.

This work is also in line with the recommendations of the UNESCO Policy Paper on ‘GCED and the rise of nationalist perspectives’ that calls for building a constructive civic and political engagement as a response to the new challenges to the values of GCED.

In this light, this meeting seeks to understand better how to support educational institutions so they can empower students to undertake effective and responsible forms of engagement for transformative purposes.
