Celebration of the 8th edition of World Radio Day in Tashkent

On 13 February 2019, UNESCO will celebrate the 8th edition of World Radio Day.
This day marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.

On that basis, World Radio Day 2019 will celebrate the theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”. Broadcasts that provide a platform for dialogue and democratic debate over issues, such as migration or violence against women, can help to raise awareness among listeners and inspire understanding for new perspectives in paving the way for positive action.
Following a good tradition of joint celebration of World Radio Day, this year UNESCO Tashkent Office along with its partners UN RC Office, UNFPA, National TV and Radio Company (NTRC), plans to conduct a number of events:
• Visiting the radio channel of “Uzbekistan 24” by the students of the journalism faculties from the National University of Uzbekistan named after M. Ulugbek and the Uzbek State University of World Languages.
• Production of informational audio clips about the localized UN Sustainable Development Goals in Uzbekistan.
• Conduct the Live Radio Programme with participation of representatives from the mahalla, Committee on Women's Affairs, law enforcement agencies on the subject of the Role of Women in Society.

Radio is specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people—the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor—while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level. Furthermore, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief.

By celebrating every year the World Radio Day, UNESCO promotes SDG 16.10 “Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements.”

Objective of the events is to raise greater awareness among the public and the media of the importance of radio, to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to information through radio and to enhance international cooperation through communicating important messages through radio.
