Workshop on Youth and Sports for Social Cohesion in Syria

This three-day workshop on “Youth and Sports for Social Cohesion in Syria” is the result of a collaborative effort involving UNESCO, the Ministry of Education of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Syrian National Commission for UNESCO. It will take place in Damascus, Syria from 18 to 20 March 2019. The workshop, which includes basic skills in designing and implementing youth sports activities for social cohesion, aims to promote a culture of peace among youth in Syria.

Sports offer a common language and a platform for social democracy. Sport creates conditions for political democracy and is instrumental to the development of democratic citizenship. Sport enhances the understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and it contributes to the fight against prejudices. Young men and women can develop appropriate social and emotional skills and positive attitudes toward self and others thus promote social cohesion through sport.

As part of UNESCO’s strategy on youth, this workshop aims to highlight the role and capacities of youth in social cohesion through the use of sports to reduce conflict and increase social rapprochement in Syria.

The workshop targets a group of 30 youth male and female leaders coming from the greater Damascus. The experience will be replicated in a following workshop in Latakia, Syria in April 2019.
