Community-Based Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventorying

This workshop is organized as a concluding event to share the experience and findings acquired during the implementation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventory project in George Town, Malaysia, conducted between the months of January and April 2019.

The principal aim of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventory project is to encourage cities to develop inventory of intangible cultural heritage and deepen understanding on ICH’s contribution to the urban socio-economic well-being. There are 3 cities selected to be the pilot sites for the first phase of the project, namely George Town (Malaysia), Kingston (Jamaica) and Harare (Zimbabwe). In George Town, the project focuses on the inventorying of rituals and festive events as they typically characterize the life of George Town and play vital role in sustaining local economy as much as social cohesion.

The wrap-up workshop intends to be a concluding event where the community members of George Town will share their experience and lessons learned acquired during the community-based inventorying process. They plan to brainstorm on ways to protect the already identified George Town's festivals and rituals.
