Jane Goodall Institute: innovations in Great Apes research in the Gombe Masito Ugalla Biosphere Reserve

The Gombe Masito Ugalla Biosphere Reserve, Tanzania, is an important site for research on chimpanzees. It includes the Gombe National Park, where Jane Goodall conducted much of her research. The Jane Goodall Institute (JIG) has been working with local communities in and near the biosphere reserve to improve the conservation of Great Apes and their habitats, as well as people’s quality of life.

This side event will focus on the long term research conducted in the Gombe Masito Ugalla Biosphere Reserve for nearly 60 years. Innovative applications of mapping technologies to design and manage landscapes in ways that improve people’s livelihoods and chimpanzee’s well-being that were developed with local communities and Dictrict Governements will be presented by Dr. Lilian Pintea, Vice-President, Conservation Science at the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI).

A round table will bring together experts and representatives to discuss the challenges of Great Apes conservation, and particularly chimpanzees, as well as the role biosphere reserves can play to address these challenges:

- H.E. Mr. Samwel William SHELUKINDO, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Tanzania, Permanent Delegate to UNESCO
