Celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Slave Route Project in Benin

From 19 to 24 August 2019, the Government of Benin will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the "Slave Route Project: Resistance, Liberty, Heritage",in partnership with UNESCO. This event will also provide an opportunity to highlight the project’s accomplishments and discuss its prospects in the framework of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024). The members of the International Scientific Committee will be associated with these events to share their expertise and experience.

Launched in 1994 in Ouidah (Benin), the "Slave Route Project: Resistance, Liberty, Heritage" is a UNESCO flagship programme that has made a significant contribution to enhancing our knowledge of the slave trade, slavery and their consequences.

It has done so through various activities, including scientific research, the publication of reference books, the development of educational materials, the inventory of sites of memory, the promotion of living cultures and the preservation of archives and oral traditions related to this history.

The project aims to “break the silence” on this tragedy, highlight the resulting cultural interactions, and promote this shared heritage, in particular the contributions of enslaved people to the construction of modern societies.

Its holistic and integrated approach has enriched the global reflection on reconciliation, cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and plural identity.

The project also played a crucial role in the recognition of the slave trade and slavery as ‘crime against Humanity’ during the World Conference against Racism held in Durban (South Africa) in 2001.
