Festivals of The Gambia: Festivals as a Tool for Unity and Cohesion in Society

© NCAC/Gambia

This is an illustrated presentation describing the nature, import and value of the regular cultural festivals held in the Gambia since 1994.

The Gambia government, under the leadership of President Yahya Jammeh recognizes the contribution of festivals in promoting cultural diversity and inter-cultural dialogue among the diverse people of The Gambia. These festivals also help to engender sub regional dialogue and cohesion and integration because cultural groups from across the West African region attend these festivals. The festivals are therefore seen as a vehicle for engendering mutual respect, peace and tolerance in society. Above all, the festivals help to preserve culture and traditions and boost tourism.
