Chemistry : all about you

UNESCO in collaboration with the University of Nigeria and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) will organize a scientific education week at the International Institute of Biotechnology, Nsukka from 25 to 29 March 2013. During the whole week, this Category II Centre of UNESCO will host a series of training and demonstration workshops and an exhibition on the topic of “Water” to mark the International Year of Water Cooperation. The three workshops will focus on: Scientific m-Learning, Global Microscience Experiments and the Global Water Experiment.
From 25-28 March 2013 will be held the Scientific m-Learning workshop: which aims to inform the academic community in developing countries about the latest mobile technology providing educational possibilities, and the creation of scientific applications for mobile devices.

It is designed to give a general overview of "Scientific Mobile Learning", including technical guidance, and its impact on society. The programme was prepared by UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector in collaboration with the ICTP and precisely Science Dissemination Unit (SDU), in Trieste (Italy). It is based on the first training activity held in Trieste in 2012 by UNESCO-SDU, which is currently being carried out around the world.

From 26-27 March 2013 will be held the Teacher Training using the Global Microscience Experiments: It is proposed to conduct a two-day introductory and demonstration workshop on Chemistry, Physics and Biology with an international facilitator in order to demonstrate the Microscience methodology and the development of the UNESCO Global Microscience Project. Participants would have the opportunity to see the kits being used in conjunction with the accompanying teaching and learning materials. In practical session, participants/ teachers can carry out different experiments.

From 28-29 March 2013, the Global Water Experiment: As part of the International Year for Water Cooperation, will invite around 1000 students from 15 schools who will conduct a series of experiments on water to study water quality and water purification in their own environment with the objective of raising awareness of the importance of water, its rarity, and its value.

In addition to these workshops, an exhibition will be dedicated to the International Year of Water Cooperation to sensitize students of primary and secondary level and as well as all participants on the importance of water and water cooperation. The exhibition of 10 poster boards on the topic of “Water” is produced in collaboration with “Deyrolles pour l’avenir”.
